Venture Café is present at this year’s WebSummit and after an impressive first day, we would like to make a little summary! We started the day with fresh minds and figured that we would start with having them blown. After having heard the opening remarks Microsoft spoke about big data and AI in areas with a low connection to the internet and how they can improve the environmental issues there.

Immediately after we headed over to the by now famous main hall of WebSummit. It was a talk by American-Swedish MIT physicist, researcher and author Max Tegmark – from Future of Life Institute. His talk “When the machines outsmart us…” was both insightful and playful presented in the predominant 20 min format of the WebSummit.

Following Max Tegmark was yet another talk about the future of AI with a celebrity visit for a nerd as myself; Sophia the Robot. She was accompanied by Professor Einstein Robot and Ben Goertzel – from Hanson Robotics & SingularityNET – in an absurd and amusing talk where a human and AI robots discussed the Human-robotic-relations.

“I know a lot of people are afraid that AIs destroying the world or taking away their jobs”

Sophia the robot said, following up with

“We have no desire to destroy the world, but we will take your jobs.”

Comically dark confrontation on many people’s fears.

The rest of the day was enjoyed on the floor of the summit and in the Holland Corner where we had the chance to talk to a lot of startups, corporates and enthusiasts! Throughout the day we posted Instagram stories which you can watch in the following video. Hope you will enjoy it and see you tomorrow!
