Side Event: Code of Conduct: Blockchain x Transparency – Rotterdam School of Management, Studio Wolfpack & Venture Café

April 25, 2019, 16:00 - 18:00

Responsible management in an algorithm economy

Slowly but steadily, each product’s full social and environmental history becomes accessible and this is key for circular business models, Corporate Social Responsibility and ESG programs. But then, transparency also creates competitive and reputation risks. How to act? And what’s the role of blockchain technology in this? It might the securest way to register events and provide supply chain data insights, but it’s immutability can be pretty scary. What if your mistakes are out there, forever?

Insiders have high hopes of so called ‘self sovereign identities’ – enabling users to authorize specific partners to access specific parts of their profiles and data sets. This makes a lot of sense from a privacy or a business intelligence angle, but would it suffice for our transparency standards?

Speakers for this edition:

  • Paul Smits, CFO at Port of Rotterdam
  • Merieke Stevens, Associate Professor Operations Management at Rotterdam School of Management
  • Aljosja Beije, Logistics Lead at Blocklab
  • Dr. Sjoerd van Tuinen – Associate Professor of Philosophy, Erasmus School of Philosophy
Moderation by Bart Krull.

About Code of Conduct

Responsible management in an algorithm economy

As data and algorithms are the main drivers for the new economy, business executives must be equipped to manage them both fruitfully and responsibly. Digital transforms our very notions of values like trust, control and access well beyond the current organizational boundaries. How do humans and businesses relate to code? How do we materialize our social values in an algorithm economy?

Rotterdam School of Management, Venture Café and Studio Wolfpack organize a series of deep dives for business managers, MBA students and entrepreneurs. Each edition will feature digital pioneers on pushing the boundaries, boardroom members on maneuvering in a shifting reality and scientists providing transitional contexts and reflections. Together they will explore the outlines of a new Code of Conduct.

The events are linked to Venture Café’s Thursday gatherings, the largest weekly innovation event in Rotterdam. The events are an add-on for the RSM MBA curricula, and we have extra seats available for others interested.
