Break Out: What Unconscious Bias Means for YOU! – Shell International

September 21, 2017, 17:00 - 18:00

Biases may be held by an individual, group, or institution and can have negative or positive consequences. Biases may be conscious or unconscious and as an entrepreneur, corporate or investor it is essential to be aware of your unconscious bias(es).

Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one’s tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing.

Unconscious bias is far more prevalent than conscious prejudice and often incompatible with one’s conscious values. Certain scenarios can activate unconscious attitudes and beliefs. For example, biases may be more prevalent when multi-tasking or working under time pressure.

Join this session to become aware of and potentially in touch with your unconscious bias! Shell International’s Diversity Manager, Lencola Sullivan-Verseveldt, is with us to inspire you around the subject and will moderate the session as we do some exercises with you!

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies. With approx. 90,000 employees in more than 70 countries, Shell is helping to meet the world’s growing demand for energy in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways.
