Break Out: Innovations Around the World Series – #2: City Sustainable Transformations: Bilbao and Rotterdam – Municipality of Bilbao & Rotterdam

The second edition of Venture Café’s “Innovations Around the World” Series! An initiative of Venture Café’s European locations in Warsaw, Bilbao and Rotterdam.

This week featuring City of Rotterdam and City of Bilbao. They will reflect on the transformations of these cities, present some examples as well as opportunities for collaboration. Join in and get global connections!

Series #2 speakers:

  Lars Crama

Lars Crama is an ecosystem connector, keynote speaker and active angel investor from the Netherlands. Currently, he is the private lead for Up!Rotterdam, a four year public private initiative to strengthen the metropolitan startup & scale-up ecosystem.

Lars has twenty years of experience in leading international startup, scale-up and corporate organizations. He headed the leading Dutch martech agency (acquired by Merkle Inc.), he launched a Fortune 500 analytics venture in Europe (acquired by Nielsen) and was the CMO of Startupbootcamp, the largest startup accelerator in Europe. And he built a circular economy incubator in 12.000m2 written off real estate. He advises corporate executive teams and their ventures in more than 10 countries. Lars lived in Shanghai, holds an MBA from University of Cape Town and London Business School and has worked in most regions of the world.

  Susana Ruiz

SUSANA RUIZ is Senior Technical Officer at the Urban Planning Office of Bilbao City Council. Previously she was project manager in strategic planning and operations at the Department of housing in the Basque Government. She has a degree in Architecture from the University of Navarra and a Masters in Town Planning and Real State Valuations from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. She is currently studying a degree in Environmental Sciences.  Since 2009, the Urban Planning Office of Bilbao City Council has been designing the new General Plan for the next 20 years. The General Plan will be definitively approved in 2021.

  Julen Gonzalez (moderator)

Julen González is a PhD in Sustainable Development (James Hutton Institute and University of Dundee, UK) and holds a position as a Sustainability Project Manager at Naider, a consultancy based in Bilbao & San Sebastián (Spain). Previously, he had obtained a Masters Degree in Environmental Conservation and Economics from the University of St Andrews (UK) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of the Basque Country (Spain).

At Naider, Julen is responsible for different projects related to urban sustainability, natural capital and ecosystem services, nature-based solutions, sustainability indicators, environmental management of companies, among others. Prior to joining Naider in 2019, Julen worked as a Researcher, Environmental Consultant and Volunteer across different countries, including Australia, Scotland, Czech Republic, Greece and Spain. Through these experiences, Julen acquired an interdisciplinary view of the society and committed to the different societal and environmental challenges ahead.

About “Innovations Around the World” Series
An initiative of Venture Café’s European locations in Bilbao and Rotterdam. A series of monthly recurring sessions where the communities from around the globe can share, engage and connect. The sessions will focus on subjects relevant to our target groups and local ecosystems.
