Break Out: Gamification for Translation – Travis Foundation

March 28, 18:30 - 19:30

Travis Foundation is creating a machine translation for Tigrinya, the language spoken in Eritrea and Northern Ethiopia. There’s roughly 10 million Tigrinya speakers globally and 20,000 Eritrean people in The Netherlands. But the language isn’t supported on any translation engine or app!

A few weeks ago, they launched The Sentence Society, a game where playing contributes data for language digitisation. Through this, they’re aiming to collect 1 million sentences (they’re at 100K so far). Now, thanks to a little deep learning magic, they’re excited to share a Tigrinya and English machine translation which will be launched shortly!

If you’d like to chat more about machine translation, gamification, crowdsourcing, refugee communication or Eritrean food, we look forward to meeting you!

Travis Foundation is a non-profit that bridges language barriers where it’s needed most. They compile language data, apply machine learning technology and create tools for communication.
