Break Out: The Endless Runway – Netherlands Aerospace Center

June 8, 2017, 17:45 - 18:30

This event will be a presentation of the Endless Runway, the concept for a circular runway at airports that has been extensively presented in the news recently and can be found at many websites from around the world. The presenter, Henk Hesselink, will explain the concept and the motivation for performing the work. He will explain the basic concept for operating the circular runway and will inform the audience on the results of simulations that have been carried out. A brief history of the concept will be given as well.

The Endless Runway has been worked out in a project that was sponsored by the European Commission (the Framework 7 program) and carried out by a consortium of research institutes in The Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain and Poland. Within this project, a concept for operating a circular runway has been set up and several elements have been further evaluated in detail. In particular, simulations have been performed to make an assessment of capacity and environmental impact of the circular runway.

It has been shown that the Endless Runway provides higher capacity and reduces environmental impact of the airport, while maintaining the high safety level of aviation.

The Endless Runway is considered an innovation that should lead to new insights in airport operations. Why are airports designed and operated the way they are? This presentation is intended to rethink the concept of airports. The public is welcome to ask questions to make this an interactive event.

NLR is the main research center for aerospace in The Netherlands and provides expert knowledge to academia, industry and aviation stakeholders.
