Leiden, 12 February 2018 – Startup Concord Neonatal BV receives an investment of €300,000 from the UNIIQ investment fund for the development of Concord. With Concord, a neonatologist can provide life-saving care in the first critical minutes, without first cutting the umbilical cord. The investment was announced by Ms Alexandra van Leeuwen, director of Facility Services LUMC.

Benefits of waiting with cutting the umbilical cord

In the Netherlands about 12,000 children are born prematurely each year, or more than 30 per day. Children born early have a greater danger of permanent physical and mental complications.

The benefits of a few minutes of waiting with cutting the umbilical cord, or “late boning”, have been recognized worldwide. This offers, among other things, higher chances of survival and less chance of complications. Unfortunately, babies needing urgent care cannot currently benefit from these benefits; In order to take the baby to a separate CPR table, the doctor must cut the umbilical cord directly. Neonatologist dr. Arjan te Pas of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) Concord, solved this problem: “Waiting with de-boning until breathing gives better blood flow to the vulnerable newborn”.

Concord keeps the baby close to mother

Concord is a new type of table that can be used at all births, in delivery rooms and in operating rooms at caesarean sections. The baby can be placed on the bed immediately after birth, which is turned over the mother so that the umbilical cord can stay connected to the mother. In addition to the benefit of improved circulation, the baby with Concord stays close to mother so that she can make direct contact with her newborn child.

Concord improves care in the first critical minutes

In order to make clinical research possible in several international hospitals and to be able to market Concord worldwide, NLC – The Healthtech Venture Builder – founded the start-up company Concord Neonatal BV. With the investment of UNIIQ, Concord Neonatal can develop the current prototype into a CE-marked product and put it on the market.

CEO Rianne Rotink explains: “Concord is a very beautiful invention that can have a major impact on the lives of these vulnerable babies and their families. We are therefore very pleased with this investment from UNIIQ, with which we can take an important step to ensure that millions of premature babies can receive this improved care every year.”

According to Liduina Hammer, Fund Manager UNIIQ “investments from UNIIQ are intended for both technical and market validation of a technology. The planned developments at Concord fit seamlessly with this. A promising and life-saving technology that may have a major impact on the care of premature babies in the future.”
